Abstract: Hsu Tsung-han was a celebrated woman in Republican China, mainly because of her romance and life with Huang Hsing (1874-1916). Historians in mainland China and Taiwan have long regarded her as a revolutionary heroine. It has not been pointed out, however, that traditional influences worked in her throughout her life, even in her revolutionary activities. This article attempts to use available sources to show the interplay of tradition and change in her life and career.
