  • Abstract: ng>application of linear programming to an optimal design of bridges with standard prestressed girders is given. A linear programming model is presented for the design of such bridges using the current bridge codes to produce design aids for selecting the most economical girder and its spacing for a given span, as well as to obtain the minimum prestressing force needed, together with the design criteria which control the design. An example is given to illustrate the proposed method, which avoids the current method in use which is based on the designer's own judgment and on trial and error, with no guarantee of obtaining the most economical design.
