  • Abstract: Tellurium, as the tetrachloride, was toxic to male Pekin ducks at concentrations of 500 and 1000 ppm in the diet, resulting in heavy mortality and a marked reduction in body weights within 2 weeks. Although growth rate was maintained at levels of 50 and 250 ppm, respectively, 50 and 70% of the ducks died by the fourth week of feeding. Gross lesions consisted of myocardial hemorrhage and apparent necrosis, hydropericardium, grayblack discoloration of intestines and malacia of the frontal cerebrum. Microscopic alterations included extensive areas of myocardial necrosis accompanied by edema, hemorrhage, and vascular congestion and deposition of presumably elemental Tellurium within the lamina propria of the duodenal mucosa. Accumulation of nuclei of sarcolemma cells or proliferated cardiac fiber nuclei were observed in hearts from some ducks. Necrosis and vacuolization of hepatocytes were common findings.Focal as well as more extensive areas of necrosis were observed in the brains of ducks fed Tellurium at the three highest concntrations. Necrosis occurred both at the surface of the cerebrum and more deeply. In the most severely affected areas, capillary proliferation and gliosis were observed along with deposits of presumably Tellurium in neuroglia. Focal neuronal rarefaction and extensive thinning of cortical tissue were observed.
